Task
Migralearn.ai was initially created by a small team of developers as a POC. However, before they went to market with the product they asked to redesign the application following proper UX design principals. The requirements were to create a design system with new components then to redesign the main dashboard using the new styling and components.
Building a Design System
Colors
There was no established design system in place in the POC. There were only a couple of colors, the components that made up the app were random, and fonts were all over the place. The first step needed before designing a dashboard was to reset the design system with styling that had intent and components that were aligned to create a unified system. After conducting a brand audit with the team, we were able to come up with a color palette.
Text Styles
After the colors were established, we needed to address the lack of consistency in the text styles. Since this was going to be a mobile-first design, we wanted to make sure the text would work for desktop and mobile breakpoints. Based on the brand audit, we agreed on a font with stakeholders and went on to design out the basic text sizes and styles.
Components
Once the colors and text styles were designed, the rest of the components were built out. This included form fields, buttons, widgets, cards, etc. Since the main focus was the dashboard, only components used in the main dashboard were designed at this stage.
The Dashboard
The second phase to this project was to build the dashboard from the new design system. This involved some user research to determine the correct heiarchy of the widgets and structure of the page as well as usability testing to assure users were able to find content they needed correctly. After a couple of iterations of the dashboard, a final design was proposed which stakeholders approved.
